This is a classic mystery novel that I picked up at a half-price sale at Open Books. I like to keep a backlog of small to mid-sized fiction novels because I’m always reading one, no matter what’s on the Kindle. But this book is not small to mid-sized in content, it’s a giant, complex, enjoyable mystery that continues to influence pop culture today.
Shrimp and Grits from Little Goat
I had a client on the GA/SC border and I remember the first time I had shrimp and grits. It sounded like such a weird combo but low country folk toss it around like we in the north say steak and potatoes. Little Goat paid tribute to shrimp and grits beautifully, they dressed it up with asparagus and braised pistachio. The abundant grits are hidden underneath the broth and made for an awesome breakfast.
Fast and Furious 6
This was bad, but I liked it, which is the worst possible scenario. The scenes fit into four categories: chase, fight, humorous interlude, plot. They got half of them right. Batting .500 really isn’t that bad when you think about it. I’m not talking about thinking really hard about it, just thinking.
St. Louis Cardinals vs Texas Rangers
Busch Stadium was packed for a Friday night matchup against a very good Texas Rangers team. Lyons from St. Louis didn’t have good stuff and left in the second after allowing four runs. It was 4-4 at the end of two but the Rangers scored two on the 9th to win 6-4. We sat in a right field box for an Axa event and had a great time at Mike Shannon’s before.
I love the Winnetka muni course. It’s difficult, well conditioned, and seems to have early Saturday tee times available pretty often. We teed off at 5:47am on Saturday ($67 with cart) and got around in 3:15. That’s blazing, which is good, but the the two eights I posted were bad. In the end I barely broke 90. Two bad rounds in a row doesn’t make a slump does it?
Glen Hansard at Pritzker Pavillion
Glen Hansard played for free in downtown and it was packed. There was no room on the lawn but the open seating in the Pavillion was decent, although a little obstructed. We heard from friends that Hansard’s musical Once is amazing. We need to see it.
We made a trip to University of Chicago and Robie House as part of our “tourist-in-our-own-city” weekend. While wandering around I was stunned by the size and beauty of Rockefeller Chapel. I was also stunned by the passion and enthusiasm of our Robie House tour guide, Arlene. What a great Saturday. I need to come back with me mum for the in-depth Robie House tour.
Longman and Eagle
Gail and I did the “tourist-in-our-own-city” thing this weekend and kicked it off last Friday by making our way up to Longman & Eagle for a late lunch/early dinner. It’s kinda like being an old person, eating dinner at 5:01 PM, but not really because for us it was lunch. In fact, it’s like the opposite of old. Picture this: We had lunch at 5pm so it should follow that we ate dinner at like midnight, before we partied. Okay, I know, that’s going to far, sorry.
Schaumburg Tournament Baer
Schaumburg has 27 holes and the Tournament Baer combo is the toughest by far, even if they don’t have the tees back on the eighteenth hole. See, I’m already making excuses for throwing down the first 90 of the season (I have to post an 89 though).
It’s been a year and a lot of burgers since I’ve had an Edzo’s burger and I still thinks it’s the best. It’s a lot closer in my mind though, especially after having a burger at The Lockdown. It seems like Edzo’s changed their bun sometime in the last year – the bottom bun is a little spongier than I recall. I’ll have to monitor.
