The Cubs aren’t good and I can’t recall how this game ended. It was a beautiful night though and we were with good friends and we had good food. That’s all you can ask for this year with the Cubs.
Luther – Season Three
It’s difficult to describe the sensation of this BBC TV crime thriller. In once sense it’s a current-day thriller and detective story, but it’s so implausible and gory that I found it helps to treat it like sci-fi/horror. If you do so, you aren’t constantly blowing holes in the plot and you’re prepared for the intense moments so you can keep your wife updated when she turns away (I know this from experience).
John Scalzi is a sci-fi writer I heard about years ago. You can get the whole story in my write-up of Old Man’s War from back in 2007 (this book blog is valuable). I don’t usually read one-off sci-fi or fantasy books, but there was a half-off sale at Open Books and I needed some summer reading. This worked nicely.
Kaiser Tiger
I feel sort of bad that this was part of Gail’s birthday celebration. I think she had fun, even though the food was more my style. The Bomb (as in meat bomb) sandwich was great, but a little spicy for Gail. The large order of Belgian fries were stellar, and Gail made an awesome frittata with the leftover fries the next morning. It’s been a great food summer. Kaiser Tiger has a ton of potential to rock West Randolph with great food, a killer beer list, and some nice outdoor spaces.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit
This movie was directed by Kenneth Branagh, which gave it some street cred in my book. The Jack Ryan franchise is pretty dead in my mind and doesn’t have much of a future, but this was passable. Plenty of action and decent thrills, good for a rainy night on iTunes with G.
The Escape Artist
The Brits have a monopoly on the creep factor. It amazes me that they create so man TV mini-movies with really, really creepy villains. This PBS Masterpiece Mystery thing is two episodes of about 90 minutes each starring David Tennant, the guy from Broadchurch, and his nemesis is one creepy dude.
Last Stand at Saber River
Elmore Leonard, God rest his soul, wrote some great western novels. Yeah, I know he’s famous for the crime novel, and I love those, but I suggest you check out a little 3:10 to Yuma if you want to experience one of his Westerns. Or read this book, it kicked.
This movie has a lot of potential to make you angry at the Catholic Church (or angrier), but remember, it’s a movie, so they use dramatic license. It’s based on a true story, but just keep this in perspective as you’re watching it. I try to box in my feelings so I can avoid the anger.
Gail and I went to see this at the AMC 30 and it just sucked us in. John Favreau saw us coming and kidnapped us for 90 minutes with a simple, light, yet very cool food movie. Gail and I see a lot of food movies and we loved this. Keep in mind, we’re not very discerning when it comes to food movies.
Mr. Selfridge – Season Two
If you can’t tell by now, Gail and I are PBS junkies. It started a few years ago when we nuked cable for about a year and really got wired-in to this free service. I don’t know where we’d be without WTTW, probably divorced, destitute, and demented. Maybe I’m blowing things out of proportion.
