This is a PBS documentary about the 2012 harvest in Napa Valley. I like food shows. I like food events. I like making food stuff part of my vacation experience. I’m even starting to cook, if you count smoothies and soft-boiled eggs as cooking. My relationship with food, I think, is a healthy one. I think.
Food Rules
I read The Omnivore’s Dilemma years ago and loved it. I’ve been meaning to read the other books by Michael Pollan but I haven’t gotten around to it. This booked popped up recently while I was wandering through Open Books trying to burn a coupon. It’s a short book with 64 food rules postulated by Pollan that aim to make you a better eater and a better human.
Sherlock – Season One
This is complicated stuff, but you may not need to grasp every nook and cranny of the show to enjoy it. It goes so fast and hops around so much that it may require review or re-watching to really appreciate it. Gail and I didn’t go there, we just lapped it up, and it was pretty decent.
Flying Finish
I don’t read Dick Francis that ravenously any more but whenever I finish a book I always wonder why. They’re crime novels based amongst the UK horse racing scene and they’re highly enjoyable.
White Butterfly
This is the third installment of the Easy Rawlins Mysteries by Walter Mosely, written in 1992, and it reaffirms why I’m reading these. It’s fresh, dark, and original stuff that puts Mosely squarely in the class with all the crime/mystery writers I read.
It was a horrible, rainy, slushy, cold night but Gail was on a mission to hit Eataly figuring the crowds would be light. She was right. The quality/variety combo may not be able to be matched unless you compare it to something like the food courts at Harrod’s or Selfridge’s in London. It was my first experience with razor clams and a Nutella bar.
Closed Circuit
Gail set this movie in motion for us because she noticed it had some great London shots, especially of her beloved Borough Market. It does, for sure. Plus, it’s a decent thriller, so I was pretty satisfied.
Absolute Friends
I thought about Mundy a few days ago. He’s the main character in this spy novel by John le CarrĂ©. I was just doing some dishes and I wondered if Mundy would end up being lifelong friends with Sasha. It was like I knew Mundy. He just popped into my head like any real live person I’m acquainted with. It was weird. I’m weird.
I just made a smoothie in our Vitamix with one frozen banana, four pitted dates, one tablespoon of creamy peanut butter, one cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk, and four ice cubes. Call it 350 calories of awesome in a 16 ounce cup! Potentially life-changing.
