You know my wife and I have diverged in our intake of books and screened entertainment, but there’s hope that this part of our relationship has a chance to blossom, especially since it forms the bedrock of how we met. Heck, one of the first conversations I had with her was sparked when I spied a Robert Ludlum book in her possession back in 1986. Ah, memories.
Bootleg Boogie – Michael Katon
So I’ve grabbed myself another helping of Michael Katon. I’ve spent a fair amount of time listening to Katon. Outside of Iron Maiden concert prep, it’s the only full album experience I’ve had in months. It’s been a sparse few months of music for me. I go in phases, but October is bringing some renewed vigor for listening to tunes, so look for more reviews coming soon.
At some point after Schindler’s List, Liam Neeson decided to go straight up action, full blast, man. Full friggin’ blast! So here we are, The Grey, as in the grey wolf. This is dark, ominous, borderline horror-style action.
Butcher and The Burger
Butcher and the Burger has vaulted into the darling of Chicago burger places. For good reason I guess – it has a catchy name and received national acclaim from Men’s Health magazine as the “manliest” burger. Huh? Insert “whatever” here. It was good, maybe even great, but “manliest” is one of the last words I’d use to describe this culinary treat. I guess that’s what you get from Men’s Health magazine.
The Wire – Season Four
There was a five month gap between when I finished season three of The Wire and when I started season four. I had a lot of stuff going on so I put off watching it. It’s a great show but I’ve never been the type to “stay up all night because I had to” with TV shows. Not my thing. I usually spread things out, although I have been compressing things with books this year with all of the serialized fiction I’ve been banging through.
A Drive Into the Gap
A friend told me once, “I like to keep my money in my ’hood.” He was referencing his propensity to focus his dining-out experiences in about a mile radius of his house. This struck me as a pretty cool idea so I’ve started adopting it, even for non-food items.
Did you ever fantasize about having a place down the street where you can get a good burger and watch sports? Well, I think I’m living out that fantasy because the local bar, all of one block away, has a killer burger and lots of TVs and really nice people. I didn’t discover this until about a year ago, but now my arm hurts from pinching myself. Also, my jaw hurts from laughing so hard at my own jokes.
Not A Penny More, Not A Penny Less
Gail has been telling me great things about this Jeffrey Archer book for years. She read it as a kid. When iBooks first came out they had it on sale for $2.99, so I bought it. This was like a year ago and I finally got around to reading it. In fact, I think this is the first book I’ve read on the iPhone, even on the Kindle app for iPhone. It was quite exciting and I enjoyed the experience immensely.
Bridges of Poplar Creek
Oh this is nice, real nice. I’ve never played The Bridges of Poplar Creek (formerly just Poplar Creek) but I was smitten after the first hole. So smitten, that I batted around kicking off a golf weekend here because it’s the closest quality course to O’Hare that my group hasn’t played yet (no go, however, because of high school golf practice). This place is nice and it’s a good bargain.
Chicago Golf Trip 2012
I had some friends in for a celebration in August and we played a handfull of great golf courses in Chicagoland. I’m back-dating this post so I have some flow to all of my golf posts for 2012. I’m also kind of schlocking this together just because I want to have a complete record of 2012 in the books for rounds played.
