I got a tip that Delta Rae was in Chicago from a friend who lives in Charlotte, but I couldn’t make it. I bought the album instead and gave this crew a whirl. Friend recommendations are my number one source for new music now. The days of Pandora are over.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
I got about one third through this book and had to get plot assistance. This is happening with an uncomfortable frequency lately. Author John le Carre knocked me for a wallop here and I blame myself.
Downton Abbey – Season Two
We caved and purchased Downton Abbey on iTunes so we could get season two behind us and watch season three real-time in January. It’s something Gail and I share. Cute, huh? That’s part of the attraction – watching it with Gail.
Jailbreak – Thin Lizzy
This was another $5 Amazon surprise. I’m getting concerned that I’m overusing this method of researching new music. Oh well, I’ve never owned any Thin Lizzy, but I’m damn glad I do now. Damn glad. By the way, that’s a Michael Katon reference.
A Dance with Dragons
This is book five of the whole Game of Thrones thing (actually, I should say “the Song of Ice and Fire” thing, for the purists). I had to keep reminding myself that this book has the same time frame as book four. The space-time continuum was hard to keep track of at times because the same stories from book four are viewed through the eyes of the other half of the characters.
London Match
If you like Cold War British spy thrillers with some romance and character study mixed in, Deighton could be your most reliable option. He doesn’t publish any more, but you should seek him out. I’m always trolling used book stores for his stuff.
In my view, Denzel is the most reliable actor going and he’s in top form here. This movie is not what I expected, it’s darker and more depressing than I gathered from the previews and it comes with a healthy dose of family carnage. I mean that in a good way – you know my obsession with family carnage.
The Sisters Brothers
This is a western novel, timeframe 1851. Narrator Eli Sisters and his big brother Charlie are hired killers for a guy named the Commodore. The Commodore kind of pisses off Eli a little because he assigns Charlie as the leader of their two man assassination team. Charlie is kind of an ass, but Eli loves him. Eli has a horse named Tub, which he’s not to fond of, but he accepts the beast willingly. Early in the book Eli had to have two teeth pulled and now he brushes his teeth every day. His life isn’t bad, but it’s certainly not that great.
Jiro Dreams of Sushi
Oh good lord, drop everything right now and rent this if you care about humanity. This story transcends food. It’s about craftsmanship and perfection and it’s beautiful. It’s called Jiro Dreams of Sushi and it’s a documentary that will expand your mind and entertain you.
Blackhawk Trace
When I get bargains I get fired up. When friends get bargains and pass them on to me free of charge, I get even more fired up. This happened this summer at Blackhawk Trace. My buddy bought some You Swoop coupons for two-for-one rounds so we played the Highland/Woodland set a couple of times for $45 on a few Saturdays this season. Wow, what a deal.
