I Really Enjoyed This Adrian Dantley Update by Deadspin

[link] I Really Enjoyed This Adrian Dantley Update by Deadspin

I remember watching AD for the Pistons and always wondered how this short dude who wasn’t all that athletic could be so productive underneath. Now it makes sense. This story has an interesting labor angle about both NBA players and crossing guards. I loved it. My buddy and I talked a little AD at lunch last week, so this article is very timely.

Dixie City Jam

I really want to go to New Orleans. I’ve been through it a few times, but haven’t really explored things. James Lee Burke, through the observations of his main character Dave Robicheaux, paints a picture of New Orleans that is at times unflattering, but ultimately makes it appear to be a great place to visit.

B1G Tournament Session Two at United Center

20130316-190256.jpg

The evening session was lesser quality hoops than the morning but fun nonetheless. Purdue had a chance in the last 20 seconds to win or tie versus Nebraska but couldn’t get anything to fall, so Nebraska moved on. Northwestern wasn’t really in the game with Iowa, although they did get within single digits in the second half. We had seats in section 302 about five rows from the top. They were quality seats and I paid less than $12 each for each session. Great deal on Stub Hub.

B1G Tournament Session One at United Center

20130316-185431.jpg

We started off with a bang. Brandon Paul hit a jumper from the left side on an isolation play with zero time on the clock to carry Illinois to a 51-49 win over Minnesota. Buzzer beater, yeah! Then Michigan looked flawless after a slow start and put a beatdown on Penn State. Nice seats – section 320, fourth row, the binoculars were helpful though.

House of Cards

I’ve said, “this feels like the future” before and I’ve only been half serious. Well, this feels like the future, for real. House of Cards is a modern political thriller representing Netflix’s first foray into original content that has a couple of futuristic aspects.

Marion Street Cheese Market

20130310-122054.jpg

There are a lot of dining options in Oak Park. One of the best, without question, is the Marion Street Cheese Market. Don’t let that name mislead, it’s much more than cheese and much more than market (but Marion and Street are what you would expect). It’s a few blocks south of the main drag just across from the el tracks, don’t skip it.

How I Felt Flipping Between Hockey And Basketball Last Sunday

[click] How I Felt Flipping Between Hockey And Basketball Last Sunday

Robert Mays from Grantland nails it here. He too was mesmerized by both the Blackhawks vs Red Wings and Heat vs Knicks on Sunday afternoon. I was inspired to write the aside just below (or previous to this post) mostly because of the awesome Patrick Kane shootout goal. It’s worth a watch.

[aside] When I Was Kid, Watching Sports Was A Weekend Thing

Then ESPN came along and took all the scarcity out of sports; they destroyed the specialness of ABC’s Wide World of Sports, Mel Allen’s This Week in Baseball, and weekend college games. But weekends feel special again for me because I nuked cable, so my sports watching is mostly concentrated between noon and 6pm every Sunday. I look forward to Sunday afternoon, savor every sports moment (even for sports I never used to watch), and don’t take free TV for granted any longer. Get off my lawn!

Northwestern Versus Ohio State at Welsh-Ryan Arena

20130228-211307.jpg

Good game tonight. Bucks got out to a big lead early but Northwestern went ahead late in the second half. The Bucks pressure D finally did in the Wildcats in the last few minutes. Final score Bucks 63-53. This pic is from our seats – center court in the third row (HHH) from the top ($35). Great seats. I need to make more visits to Welsh-Ryan.

Downton Abbey – Season Three

I got sucked in to Downton about a year ago and it’s been quite a ride. My enjoyment of it has many facets. At times it’s a guilty pleasure, at times it’s a historical reference, and at other times it’s a commentary on class dividing lines applicable to today’s society. This thing has some range.
