Maui Day Two in Food

20130406-053809.jpg

Star Noodle in Lahaina was the star of the day. Gail and I agree that it will be tough to top this. Clockwise, we went with the Hot ‘n Sour, Pad Thai, Bikini Blonde, and Malasadas. Great experience.

Lahaina Nature

Lahaina is beautiful and quirky. The massive banyan tree is quite amazing despite all of the bird shit. The houses are small and packed in but well decorated, best I can tell. The lower left was just me looking up through some big tree with a huge canopy near the historical prison site.

Maui Day One In Food

20130404-194408.jpg

Our first full day in Maui was a decent food day. We stayed pretty local, got a great lead on a farm lunch outing, and wrapped it up with wine and cheese on the balcony.

[aside] People Specializing In DEFENSE Just Seem To Be More Creative And Innovative

In sports there seems to be a natural evolution towards more specialization and power (through fitness), both of which invariably favor the defense. You can try and help the offense by juicing the ball, making rules to protect the quarterback, and adding a three point line, but you’re fighting an uphill battle. The folks on the other side are going to figure out how to stop it. People specializing in defense just seem to be more tenacious, creative, and innovative. I guess it’s by necessity.

One Of My Favorite Authors Wrote A Revealing, Honest Article In GQ About His Addiction

This is a little more than a mid-life crisis for Buzz Bissinger, author of Friday Night Lights, who spent almost $700,000 in the last three years on high end clothing. He says it has a lot to do with sex. Here’s a quote from the article:

I began to buy, as silly an understatement as somebody drinking a quart of vodka a day and insisting that he or she is not an alcoholic. Clothing became my shot glass, another round, Net-a-Porter.

Spy Line

In smack-dab in the middle of this nine volume set and wondering where things are going to go. I’m also wondering who says “smack-dab” any more, and whether it should be hyphenated or not. Wouldn’t you know it, it was the middle of this book that provided the pivot point for this epic story, almost structurally in the middle.

[aside] Notes on March 2013 Wired Magazine

I agree, the Canon PowerShot N looks very interesting, especially with phone-sharing — The diagram of bullets in actual size was naughtily cool and informative — Thanks for reminding me how great book three of GoT is; this is the first time I’ve ever felt envious of HBO subscribers.

I So Want To Become A Coffee Nerd

I’ve never heard of the First We Feast food blog site, but it seems pretty legit based on this small sample. I love the fake snark about trendy coffee shops and the “no espresso machine” mandate. The article is worth keeping around because there are tons of great links to info and equipment.

The nine volume Bernard Samson epic by Len Deighton is amazing stuff. I’m starting the second half.

[aside] That Justin Timberlake Song Came On And I Didn’t Turn The Channel

I just sat and listened to it, while driving. The windows were up and I was alone, so it was a low risk situation. The Jay-Z “interlude” was great. I kind of look forward to another round of JT. Oh no you didn’t!
