Here is the map for this 10 mile urban hike.

I’ll see you at the back of The Lodge parking lot at Starved Rock next Sunday, 7/26, at 10am for the Starved Rock White Fence hike. Here’s a link to the map (broken) with tentative route and some notes on parking. I’m expecting to be out on the trail from 10am – 2pm depending on the crowd and how fired up we are.
We’re going to need to burn some calories to justify the late lunch at White Fence Farm on the way home.
Looking Back at Spacca Black Dog
The urban hike Spacca Black Dog went well. Let’s discuss. More after the jump.
The Urban Hike Chicago Patch
I’ve made a minor change and I’ll be at Eckhart Park at 8am Saturday, June 20th, for some Bodyweight PT. That’s a half hour earlier than originally noted. See the workout after the jump.
- 20 reps each, one trip through
- 3 burpees after each (51 total)
- Push-ups
- Squats
- Atomic sit-ups
- Alternate lunges
- Push-ups (round 2)
- Crabsters
- Planksters
- Squat jumps
- Yanos
- L sit scissors
- HIALS
- Plank toe taps
- Rocket girls
- Squat toe taps
- Sit-ups
- Side plank stars
- Side lunges
It should take less than a half hour. That gives me a half hour to cool down and stretch, and maybe change shirts, before meeting at Big Shoulders Coffee. I don’t expect anybody to show up for this and it’s technically not part of the hike. But I’m putting it out there, if you’re interested.
Here are the estimated times on the upcoming 10 mile urban hike on June 20th that I’ve dubbed Spacca Black Dog (click for map).
- 9:15am – Big Shoulders Coffee Arrive
- 10:00am – Big Shoulders Coffee Depart
- walk 5-ish miles
- 11:30am – Spacca Napoli Pizzeria (lunch hour)
- 12:45pm – Half Acre Beer Company Tap Room
- 1:15pm – Begyle Brewing Tap Room
- walk 5-ish miles
- 3:00pm – Black Dog Gelato
You may notice that I haven’t included any bodyweight PT in the hike. Don’t worry, I’m still going to do it, but it’s going to happen before the hike. I’ll be at Eckhart Park at 8:00am and will be doing a half hour workout. I’ll post the workout separately.
There are some surprises on the way also, including free stuff! I’ll get back to you.
These are not guaranteed, but here’s what I’m estimating:
- Big Shoulders 8:00am (that’s departure, I’ll be there at 7:30am, first 5 people get free coffee/espresso on me!)
- Eckhart Park Workout 8:15am
- Star Lounge 9:15am
- Parson’s 10:00am
- Honey Butter 11:30am
- Harold’s 1:00 pm
I’ll refine these a little more as the week goes on.
You may have heard about the 10 mile urban hike happening on April 25th called Coffee, Cocktails, and Chicken. You’re all welcome to come. You’re also welcome to come to a quick body weight PT session happening early on in the hike.
The body weight PT is optional. You can participate simply by showing up at the start time at Big Shoulders Coffee because we’ll do the PT shortly after within the first mile. It’s either going to be at Ekchart Park (Chicago and Noble) or Commercial Park (Wolcott, a block north of Chicago).
If you don’t want to participate, you can meet us immediately after at Dark Matter Coffee/Star Lounge at 2521 West Chicago, our second stop.
We’re keeping it simple, here’s the target workout:
- 100 push-ups
- 100 squats
- 100 sit-ups
- 50 burpees (thighs to ground, no jump)
- 100 alternating lunges (50 each leg)
You can do more or you can do less. Doesn’t matter, nobody will be counting. We’ll max the time at 20 minutes. I did it today in 5 sets of 20-20-20-10-20 and it took me 19 minutes. Let’s not go overboard because there’s still 9 miles to walk after this and it’s early in the season. This will get more complicated as the season progresses.
This thing is still in the planning stages but I’ve got a date; save Saturday April 25th! We’re starting early to mid-morning and taking a 10 mile tour through Ukrainian Village, Humboldt Park, Logan Square, Avondale, Bucktown, and Wicker Park. There’s a map after the jump.
It will start and end at Big Shoulders Coffee at Chicago and Milwaukee in West Town, but you can join and leave anywhere along the route. I’ll post periodic updates online mostly on Twitter @jstefdotcom.
We’ll be making planned stops at Dark Matter, Parson’s, Honey Butter, and Harold’s. These chicken places are heavy into cocktails, it seems, so be careful. These won’t be long stops. We may sit down, but it will be short.
I’m also throwing in about 30 minutes of bodyweight PT early on, maybe at a park along Chicago avenue before the caffeine hit at Dark Matter. Depending on the weather, we’re talking sit-ups, push-ups, squats, and lunges – maybe a 100 each, or as many as you can do, whatever. If you’re not up for that, join us after at Dark Matter.
I’m expecting the whole thing to go from like 8am-ish to 1pm-ish. I don’t know. The route is in blue below. Red things are chicken places, black things are coffee places, and blue things are public transpo spots (Blue Line and Divvy Bike stations). Hover or click each for info.
Check back, I’ll have more in the coming weeks, including a rough timeline with meeting places and contact info.
