Spy Sinker

Spy Sinker is the conclusion to the second trilogy of the Bernard Samson novels. It’s awesome. I have three more to go and I’m just launching in to them (the final trilogy is called Faith, Hope, and Charity). I’m making the final 1,000 pages my project for the next month and I’m fired up. This could impinge on the NBA Playoffs, but that’s cool.

Zero Dark Thirty

This movie depicts a real life situation without pulling punches and I think it aims to be a little more factual than 42, which I saw recently. They’re both great movies though. They share a common effort to depict American heroes in a manner that is truthful and moving at the same time.

42

This is quite a story, even without the Disney spice. They dramatized it just the right amount I think; enough to reel in what I’m assuming is a massive audience without turning off hardcore sports movie fans like me.

Notes on the Plate Meal

20130430-213704.jpg

I’ve traditionally been a sandwich guy. Or more generally, I’ve always liked the starch completely integrated with the protein/bean/veggie item so it can be consumed by hand, with a relatively uniform experience throughout. That’s burgers, pizza, and burritos man. These things have supplied endless joy to me for my whole life. Feel me?

[via Gail’s Twitter] This is especially interesting – the coffee part at least. Is building a kickin’ spreadsheet considered the creative process?

Links at Carillon Blue/Red

My first round of golf in Chicago came about because a buddy of mine cracked out an early season Golf Now coupon for an after-12pm round on Sunday at Links at Carillon. We got lucky on the April weather crapshoot and my lightweight mock turtleneck with vest (shorts, of course) was actually too warm at times.

The Lean Startup

I’m hearing “lean” everywhere (I mean lean like no fat, not lean like lean in). Usually the word is used in a manufacturing context with products made of glass, steel and plastic coming off an assembly line, but this book puts it in a startup context where products are often web services or apps. The author is a tech entrepreneur named Eric Ries and he promotes something called the Build – Measure – Learn feedback loop.

Sweetness

I bought this book after the author, Jeff Pearlman, got a chance to push it on ChicagoSide. His plea to rethink the negativity and vitriol spewed out by John Kass and Mike Ditka inspired me to give it a whirl. I’m damn glad I did, for multiple reasons.
