Navigation

There are many ways to read and navigate my content. Here are some suggestions:

  • Web browser
  • RSS reader
  • Social magazine app, like Flipboard
I’ve tried to give you a bunch of options. I’ll discuss each.

Web Browser

The best way to plow through the site is to view it in a browser window at least 700 pixels wide. The Home page contains snippets of the last dozen posts in reverse chronological order. I’ve added icons denoting categories for work, food, books, or golf so you can pick them out easily. Snippets without icons are usually categorized as music or screen items. At the bottom of any snippet page, you can use the Previous Entries and Next Entries links to browse the timeline back and forth in blocks of twelve.

Things work pretty well in a smartphone browser also. You have to do some pinching, pulling, and double clicking, but it renders in a relatively readable form. I think the print is a little small and cramped on a phone, but you can always squint, or send things to an app like Instapaper for a better reading experience.

If you want to see a list of post titles only, you can go to my Archives page. I’ve grouped each post by category and added some quick navigational tips if you want to browse the titles. This page is also a good general overview for how I’ve organized things.

If you want to search for something, you can search the full content of posts along and titles by using the search boxes in either the header or footer. They both do the same thing, I’ve just situated them at the top and bottom to make them accessible.

I do have a tagging system, but I’m not comfortable with it right now so I’m going to hold off.

RSS Reader

You can subscribe to my RSS feed through your reader of choice. I only have one feed and it includes the full text of every post. You can also get each post emailed to you by filling out the form in the footer.

Social Magazine App

If you’re so inclined, I’ve set up Twitter feeds to give you some real flexibility. Following are what’s available:

  • @slowjstef – A link to every post is tweeted here, that’s all. It’s a veritable magazine of me. I use the term slow to differentiate it from my primary Twitter account, @quickjstef. If you want an uncluttered list of the long form stuff as I post it, follow @slowjstef.
  • @workjstef – This is just a link to any post related to my work. It’s kind of the same as @slowjstef, except I occasionally throw in other work comments and links to stuff outside of this site.
  • @golfjstef – As you can tell by now, this is just a link to any post related to golf. My vision of a website devoted entirely to Chicago public golf goes back many years. I haven’t been able to execute on it so hopefully this web setup finally gets me close.

If you follow any of these Twitter feeds, it’s very easy to put them on your Flipboard.

Personally, Flipboard is my reader of choice for Twitter stuff I don’t want to miss. I follow about 150 people on Twitter and I never get through my whole timeline, so friends and family get lost in the shuffle. My solution is to devote my Flipboard (on iPhone) exclusively to Twitter and set up each of these high priority connections with a Flipboard page (if that’s what you call it). It makes staying in touch a piece of cake.
